So I haven't been trying to remember dreams lately. This is mainly because i'm just focusing on getting some sleep before the next horrible day arrives. I tried last night again, it worked of course, but since I wasn't trying as much as I should have, I hardly remembered anything.
You wanna try remembering a dream? It's easy, really. The trick, is to adjust your alarm to wake you up 3 hours after you fall asleep. Afterwards, set it to go off in another 2 hours, then another 2 hours. That's right. You can remember up to 3 dreams per night. This is due to the times when you have REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement). You have REM sleep 3 hours after you fall asleep, then every two hours afterwards until you wake up. Why do people who sleep well not remember anything? Because they sleep for 8 hours, meaning they ended REM sleep an hour earlier.
Set your alarm to go off 3 hours after you fall asleep. In my case, I fall asleep at 11 and I set it to go off at 2am. Now, just because you wake up doesn't mean you'll completely remember it. It will leave your mind VERY quickly. So, what you have to do is quickly hit the snooze button. Keep your eyes closed and recall every single event that happened in your dream. This will embed it into your memory so that it won't go away. Afterwards you can just set the alarm to go off 2 hours later (in my case, 4am). Repeat the process, and then set it in another 2 hours (6am for me). When you're completely awake, try to go through your dreams. I doubt you'll remember all 3 if its your first time. Some people decide to write down their dreams right when they wake up.
Well, I've done this a lot before, this isn't just me regurgitating something I found online so you know it works. You don't have to worry about nightmares. If it's that bad, it'll wake you up by itself with or without an alarm, so whether or not you try this you'll remember it. Try it, you might remember something pleasant ;D
